“In The Company of My Sisters”
Memorial Project
Once, in a village, a young man's life ended tragically by his own hand. The village folks were heartbroken, and for days, the women's cries echoed with grief. Although not formally trained, the women knew they had something valuable to offer - life experience and wisdom. Driven by the urgency to address the growing violence and mental struggles, they decided to take turns sitting on a wooden bench at the village center, offering guidance and support.
Initially, the villagers were unsure of this new approach. Sharing one's problems with others was uncommon in their culture. But one day, a young woman came, sat on the bench, and started talking. Then, another person followed suit, and then another. Soon, the village discovered a way to care for one another and ensure everyone's safety.
Inspired by this tale, the Society of Clotilda commissioned "In the Company of My Sisters," an interactive memorial project and monument. It centered on the lives and experiences of African-American women from Mobile County, Alabama, while also honoring the memory of the African women who endured the Clotilda.
